Non-Fiction
The library follows the Dewey Decimal system for non-fiction books (factual books with true information). All levels of books are together, though easier books (K-2) are differentiated with green tape, and more difficult books (grades 4 and 5) are differentiated with red tape. Each subject has a number between 0 and 999, which is followed by the first three letters of the author's last name. Use the library catalog to look up the call number, and then look on the shelf in number order. Here are some common subjects and their Dewey numbers:
398 Fairy Tales
500s Science
523 Space
567 Dinosaurs
595-599 Animals
620s Cars and Machines
796 Sports
811 Poetry
970s States
Fiction
Fiction books (imaginary stories created by an author) are divided into Easy Readers/Picture Books and Chapter Books. Within each section, they are shelved in alphabetical order by the author's last name. Easier books to read in each section have green tape on them, and more difficult books have red tape on them. Picture books have the call number E followed by the first three letters of the author's last name. Chapter books have the call number F or FIC, followed by the first three letters of the author's last name.
Special Sections
World Language books are separated into two sections, Spanish language and other languages. They all have the call number WL, followed by the first three letters of the author's last name for fiction books, or the Dewey Decimal number for nonfiction books.
Reference books are only to be used inside the library and cannot be checked out and taken home. They include dictionaries and encyclopedias. The call number is REF followed by the Dewey Decimal number.
